An Introduction to Fiction Writing

Course Overview

This is a creative writing course aimed at beginner writers who would like to experiment with writing fiction for the first time. Each class will be two hours long and conducted online by members of Brunel University of London’s Creative Writing department: Professor Bernardine Evaristo, Dr. Max Kinnings, Dr. Frazer Lee and Dr. Helen Cullen. Participants will have the opportunity to try different writing exercises as they develop their creative writing craft and grow in confidence, but there is no expectation that they will share this work with others. This is a supportive class where students can take your first steps into fiction writing with expert guides to lead the way.

Over twelve weeks, we will teach you the building blocks for fiction writing covering topics such as: Finding your voice and inspiration for your work, Characterisation, Point of view, Dialogue, Setting, Structure, Plot, Suspense, Editing and World-Building. We will also dedicate time to exploring Horror, Science Fiction and Fantasy genres and a special class looking at what we can learn about and structure and plot from screenwriters. For more details please see the proposed programme outline.

This course is aimed at beginners who are interested in exploring fiction writing for the first time. It is also perfect for anyone who has experimented with some creative writing, such as short story writing, but would like to develop and enhance their core writing skills.

Each class will be two hours long and taught over Zoom. Each class will include some writing exercises and also suggestions for exercises to continue your practice at home. You will not be required to share this work as there is no workshop component at this level, but there may be some opportunities to read the results of exercises aloud for those who would like to.

  6. Point of View
Point of View is the term we use for the perspective from which a story is narrated. For example, do you use the first person, ‘I’, or the third person, ‘he, she or they’? It’s very simple to understand and fun to play around with switching perspectives.
    Tutor: Bernardine Evaristo
