Course overview

Analysis of airborne samples plays a key role when managing asbestos in buildings in line with the Control of Asbestos Regulations (CAR) 2012. ISO14966 is the standardised method for analysis of airborne asbestos fibres collected on membrane filters using scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X ray (SEM EDX) analysis.

This 2 day course is designed to provide analysts with the knowledge and practical competence required to analyse airborne asbestos samples in compliance with ISO 14966.

Dr. Ashley Howkins is the Lead Scientific Officer within the Experimental Techniques Centre. His own speciality is electron microscopy and analysis, including SEM, (S)TEM, FIB, EDX, EELS, cathodoluminescence, electron diffraction and EBSD.

Ashley is also a member of the BSI Microanalysis subcommittee, responsible for the development of ISO standards in electron microscopy; an UKAS Technical Assessor for accredited electron microscope facilities; and member of the Royal Microscopical Society.

This 2-day course comprises a series of small group seminars with open discussions, supported by hands-on practical sessions. A significant proportion of the course is dedicated to practical laboratory work to maximise technical competence and confidence in SEM EDX analysis.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

• Understand the requirements and application of ISO14966

• Understand the fundamentals of SEM-EDX analysis

• Competently analyse air filters for the presence and number of asbestos fibres, in compliance with ISO14966

• Differentiate asbestos fibres using EDX analysis

In addition, the course content supports analysts in meeting specific requirements of ISO17025, including:

• Personnel training and technical competence (Section 6.2) - training records from this course may be used as supporting evidence within personnel competency and training files for ISO17025 accreditation.

• Use of an appropriate method (Section 7.2) – ISO14966 is a standardised method for asbestos testing and suitable for laboratories with ISO17025 accreditation.
